Meet Shop Owner Jess & Sumo!

Dare to Dream & have the Passion to Create

“Establishing deeper connections between local entrepreneurs and our community is the heartbeat of my work.” Shop owner Jessica Chan’s own entrepreneurial/maker journey fuels her passion for supporting and elevating like-minded creators. Leading Pop-Local was her next step in continuing that mission!

Jess is also the founder of our sister event company, Night Market Vancouver, established in 2017 — a family-friendly monthly marketplace that celebrates local makers in a fun, adventurous retail atmosphere. Each event features live music, a DJ, dance lessons, rotating entertainment, food/drinks and more!

Jess adopted her dog Sumo when he was just a wee bundle of wrinkles in 2018. Sumo has since been her partner in crime and our quality control officer. Sumo can often be found at Pop-Local snoozing away or giving our customers snorty kisses.

About

Pop-Local is a retail home for products created from local makers: a one-stop-shop existing to support and share the stories of independent businesses, artists, and artisans local to the Pacific Northwest - especially highlighting the Portland / Vancouver Metro. Currently representing products from over 200 local brands!

WE SUPPORT THOSE WHO DARE TO DREAM AND HAVE THE PASSION TO CREATE.

Our mission as a company is to fuel independent businesses, connect the community, and inspire a greater local economy.

Our Story

Pop-Local started as a pop up shop concept launched during the 2020 pandemic!

Night Market Vancouver (Pop-Local’s sister event company), is an on-going, family-friendly, maker marketplace. Each monthly event showcases up to over 100 local vendors and features live music, a DJ, rotating entertainment, food and drinks. Night Market Vancouver brings thousands of members from the community together to celebrate the local culture in support of small, independent businesses.

In March 2020 however, Night Market Vancouver (like so many other companies) was forced to temporarily shut down and halt all activity until further notice due to health and safety concerns during the COVD-19 pandemic. As an event business that relied entirely on large public gatherings to generate revenue, Night Market Vancouver was entirely without income. Founder Jessica Chan was forced to pivot her business model in order to survive. Although Night Market Vancouver is now operating again, Chan’s primary focus during its closure shifted to building a store to continue to support local makers, crafters, and artisans throughout the on-going pandemic.

The concept for Pop-Local was thus created to serve as a new home for local vendors — to showcase their brands and to bring their products to market without the monthly event setup, in a safer space, and without the need for vendors to put up booths.

Pop-Local officially started its journey in August 2020, as a pop-up shop in the heart of historic downtown Vancouver, Washington at 111 W 9th St. as “NMV Pop Local.” Chan was offered a temporary space by a good friend (a big thank you to Most Everything Vintage) and jumped at the opportunity, driven by a deep desire to help some of the local businesses and people affected by the shutdown.

Thanks to the local community’s incredible reception to the pop-up store concept, Pop-Local decided to go brick-and-mortar in a more permanent fashion! Fast forward to 2022, Chan opens Pop-Local at the iconic Vancouver, WA waterfront as its own establishment.

Pop-Local was a successfully funded Indiegogo Crowdfunding Campaign! Watch our short video here that tells our story to how we first started.
