Meet the Maker

June Drexsen-Hansen

Almost 50 years ago I taught myself fundamental quilt making. Since then, I have gradually improved my craft through professional classes, instruction, and experimentation. I now utilize a wide range of techniques from hand work, and machine work to various dyeing approaches.

The product process

Color and texture of the textiles are the start of my design process. From the beginning I am often unsure where the design will lead. This process guides me through a series of exploratory stages. The addition of the thread and stitch combined with the use and manipulation of found objects enhance the piece by adding tactile and visual interest through light and shadow.

My tapestry art employs a variety of techniques. Machine sewing, hand stitching & embellishment with colorful threads, yarns & beads add texture. The bowls start with rope covered with fabric. Often times I use my hand-dyed fabrics which I then sew to create a bowl or vessel .
